What is the European Capital of Culture initative about?

The European Capital of Culture Programme is one of the most important cultural programmes of the European Union. It is designed to showcase the wealth of Europe’s cultural diversity as well as shared cultural features within Europe in order to promote closer coexistence and better mutual understanding between European peoples.

The joint bid of Veszprém Municipal City and the Balaton Region for European Capital of Culture 2023 aims to widen the selection of our cultural programmes, enhance their diversity, and highlight its specifically European nature, partly through international cooperation. We strive to provide better access to culture, create and envigorate culturally embedded communities in addition to boosting the performance of the cultural sector and  strengthening its ties to other spheres of life. A major target of ours is to further improve the international image of the city through culture.

Veszprém and the Balaton Region’s joint European Capital of Culture 2023 bid is a great opportunity for Veszprém and the Bakony-Balaton Region to define our cultural, social, and economic development plans together, based on cooperation and professional dialogue. If we execute these plans together, it will mutually make all participants stronger. A number of institutions, organisations, and professionals have contributed to the material and in turn, to the success of our bid.
