The VEB2023 Ruin Concerts series opens with the event entitled A Game of Cards by Zoltán Beck (30Y) and Miklós Vecsei H. at Veszprém’s Margaret Ruins.

Veszprém and the Balaton Uplands have a unique wealth of medieval heritage: passing through the settlements of the region, visitors will very often come across ruins of monasteries, cloisters, churches, chapels and castles. These ruins are now being filled with life and art under the European Capital of Culture Veszprém–Balaton 2023 programme series called Ruin Concerts.

These events with a focus on literature and music are quite unlike big festivals which attract crowds: they offer a chance for more personal, more intimate meetings between artists, audiences and the environment itself. For this very reason, these events will admit a much lower number of visitors,  100-150 persons at most.

The 2022 and 2023 stations of Ruin Concerts bring literature and music to the finest ruin sites of the Balaton Uplands.

The event is recommended for audiences of 14 years and over.

Zoltán Beck– Miklós Vecsei H. A Game of Cards

We have got 32 cards, exactly like in a pack of Hungarian playing cards. Every card has a word or a sentence fragment on it: something that may denote turning points in life, or just a mood, or an animal, or a heavenly body.

The rules of the game:

We pick at most 10 cards for one evening. We do not know which ones because it is not us that shuffle the cards and draw them but you who are present that night. The cards have stories, poems, songs and personal experiences linked to them.  We do not tell about them even to each other in advance. This is the risk we take – and of course you take it, too.

Minimal environmental impact as well as the discovery and protection of the treasures of nature and history are the highlights of this programme series, so all performances are designed to be ZERO WASTE events:

  • There will be NO catering facility on site – please bring your own food and drinks.

  • Please pay attention and use the smallest possible amount of single-use packaging for the food and drinks you bring to the location. Bring your own cups and drink bottles if you can and do not pack any throwaway cups. Please take special care to throw even this minimal amount of waste into the appropriate bins.

  • Compost toilets will be available on site free of charge
