Who is the Hungarian painter who concentrated on Lake Balaton with every nerve and every flicker of his body, who lived in a special symbiosis with the lake and the landscape, who was already considered a painter of Lake Balaton in his lifetime? Beyond question, it is József Egry.

This year, all eyes will be on Veszprém, the European Capital of Culture, and the natural treasure of Lake Balaton, which is just a stone's throw away. 2023 will also mark the 140th anniversary of the birth of the artist who settled on the shores of the lake, and to mark the occasion, a temporary exhibition of József Egry's paintings, a symbolic 140 works, will fill three exhibition halls.

However, this is not a classic exhibition of his oeuvre. We present mature works by the painter, completed between the two World Wars. The focus is still on the pictures of Lake Balaton, but this time they will be accompanied by works from his two study trips to Italy, where he spent time at the seaside. This is quite unprecedented.

As most of Egry's Italian paintings were passed directly into private ownership as early as the 1930s, some of the works on display are on loan from art collectors. The core of the exhibition is made up of works in the collections of several museums in Budapest and in the country, mainly held in storage.

Laczkó Dezső Museum's temporary exhibition is accompanied by House of Arts Veszprém, another important art institution in Veszprém, where the early works of József Egry are on display.
