Off-Season International Contemporary Literature Festival

Off-Season International Contemporary Literature Festival, the flagship literary event of the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture programme, will take place for the second time between 23rd-26th February 2023. This year, literature enthusiasts will be welcomed in Veszprém for 4 days longer than last year, at 13 venues and with over a 100 programmes.

The original concept of the festival will not be changed in 2023: Off-Season is a multidisciplinary art festival that focusses primarily on literature, including those fringe genres that many people enjoy but rarely see at cultural events.

As well as being longer, this year's Off-Season will also be international in scope, with a number of renowned international artists joining the event, including Leopold Maurer, a comic book artist from Vienna, and Kira Poutanen, a Finnish author of a novel for teens and young adults.

In addition to the range of performances, the festival also places a strong emphasis on audience engagement with a number of workshops - comic book making, crime writing, songwriting, puppet theatre, creative writing, conceptual graphics, graffiti - and a much greater emphasis on equality of access.

The festival's programmes are free of charge, but registration is required for several events.

  • Expresszó Expresszó Expresszó The cult music club of Veszprém is the only Off-Season venue where you can try to stand more than 10 metres away from the current performer. Of course, we don't recommend this. Venue info
  • TEREM TEREM TEREM If there is one venue that encapsulates almost everything that is the Off-Season, then it is TEREM. Venue info
  • Papírkutya (Paper Dog) Papírkutya (Paper Dog) Papírkutya (Paper Dog) It hasnt taken even two years for Papírkutya to become the emblematic cultural bistro of Veszprém. And that is not by chance. Venue info
  • (Journey by Moonlight second-hand bookstore) Utas és holdvilág Antikvárium (Journey by Moonlight second-hand bookstore) Utas és holdvilág Antikvárium (Journey by Moonlight second-hand bookstore) Utas és holdvilág Antikvárium The late Sanyi Molnár. Any literary event in Veszprém would have been simply unthinkable without the legendary antiquarian of the iconic Veszprém second-hand bookshop. It is difficult to imagine this happening for the first time without him. Venue info
  • Wine & Vinyl Bar & Store Wine & Vinyl Bar & Store Wine & Vinyl Bar & Store Be very careful at Tomi Zsandár's vinyl and wine sanctuary, because as soon as you walk through the door, you could easily become addicted to buying records. Venue info
  • Fricska Family Restaurant Fricska Family Restaurant Fricska Family Restaurant All right, it's a February festival, but when it comes to Fricska, you can't go past the sight of the Séd stream meandering under Benedek Hill and the beautiful buildings of the Castle, because if you eat a Chevap or a Balaton Burger at Fricska, you get this view with your meal. In the summer. Venue info

  • Hangvilla Studio Hangvilla Studio Hangvilla Studio At Off-Season last year we experimented with different, less classical forms of theatre, and to continue and expand our efforts, we came up with the idea of having a special venue in 2023, where theatre programmes will be the only thing to find. • KUNSZT! KUNSZT! KUNSZT! A breakfast and brunch place, a cafeteria, a pastry shop, an all-purpose place. Even a design shop where you can sample the work of craftsmen and designers from the area and Lake Balaton. Venue info
  • Szeparé Szeparé Szeparé The 550-year-old building of the former Frick Mill provides a brilliant ambience on the one hand, and on the other, along with fine wines and teas, this is the place where the literature in the classical sense is concentrated during Holtszezon. Venue info
  • SÖRPINCE (BEER CELLAR) SÖRPINCE (BEER CELLAR) SÖRPINCE (BEER CELLAR) You know, there is the classic anecdote starting sentence: "If the walls of the Beer Cellar could tell a story..." Well, probably many people in Veszprém are very thankful that stories aren’t told by those wals. Venue info
  • ÍRÓDEÁK SCRIBE ÍRÓDEÁK SCRIBE ÍRÓDEÁK SCRIBE A new venue, but an old familiar place. The tiny café and tea shop in the courtyard of the library is like a time machine, a time machine that takes you back to the days when poets and writers used to go to cafés and scribble on scraps of paper the texts that we at school would read, memorise, etc., etc., with greater or - let's admit it - lesser effort.
