First Design Week Organised in Veszprém
For the first time this year, Veszprém has joined the extensive events series of the Budapest Design Week. Design Week Veszprém comes to stand as a joint project of Veszprém Municipal Town, Veszprém-Balaton 2023 Plc, and Paradigma Ariadné Studio, supported by the Veszprém Architects’ Workshop, the Veszprém House of Arts and Árkossy Furniture.

Paradigma Ariadné Architect Studio and Veszprém-Balaton 2023 Plc are proud to present the exhibition entitled 12 Walls in the former Artisans’ Training School (subsequently Primary School for Music). The building of the School has stood empty for thirty years but will soon be transferred to the use of the local Petőfi Theatre, the main building of which is situated across the street.
In the run-up to the programmes of Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture, groups of young architects of the international scene: British, American, Italian, Spanish, Ukraninian and Hungarian professionals are going to cover twelve wall surfaces with architectural decorative graphics works. The exhibition draws attention to the use of architectural motifs and experimentative tools in architecture; in addition, the spectacle is intended to pay hommage to the ornamentation art of Petőfi Theatre building’s design architect István Medgyaszay as well as his pursuit of ornaments collection.
The 12 Walls exhibition is an important linking point to the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 bid by presenting the novel type of openness and spirit of experimentation that has recently emerged in the spirit of a new, post-economic crisis generation of architects. This very spirit was emphatic at the Reconstructivist Architecture Exhibition or the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. In harmony with these concepts and architects, in its programme of European Capital of Culture, Veszprém aims to put currently unutilised buildings back into use rather than create brand new cultural infrastructure.
The 12 Walls Exhibition will be opened by mayor Gyula Porga at 15:00 on 17th October 2018 at the venue of 1 Óvári Ferenc road, Veszprém. A guided walk of the same building for the members of the Press will be held from 14:00, led by art historian Dániel Kovács and architects from Paradigma Ariadné.
