Opening Ceremony, Festival of Dance
The heart of the piece Motifs takes the form of a duet in which the performers Marthe Krummenacher and Paul Girard are attached to one another.
Constantly connected, together they support a highly demanding score and choreography. The duo grows, expands, builds showing us another meaning that can be derived from the title: motif reminding us of motive, what ultimately causes the body to move, what pushes it into action, into movement.
Carried by the notes of the piano music floating in the air, bathed in a subtle interplay of light and shade, the bodies find their path to freedom through the interweaving choreography. This continuous dynamic requires the performers to be entirely focused on each other. Whilst the performance unfolds before our very eyes, it holds us captive. With this duet, the very embodiment of attachment, Motifs inevitably asks us to look at ourselves and our own connections to everything, that which brings us together and that which separates us.
