The Aim of Creating Public Spaces

The ECOC Public Spaces aim to create interpersonal meeting venues for community organisations.

One of the key values of the VEB2023 programme is community building. A fascinating European cultural capital is one made meaningful by the vitality of its inhabitants. To achieve this, different age groups and residents living under different conditions should meet, get to know each other and understand and accept each other. Creating the public spaces envisaged in the VEB2023 programme and loading them with content creates new opportunities for this dynamic network of connections.

The VEB2023 team is working on creating three public spaces in Veszprém and filling them with programmes: Main page | ECOC Points

Design and Uniqueness of Public Spaces

In the design of public spaces, the planners were guided by wanting to provide the individual venues with the basic content and functions taking their specificities into account. They also wanted to convey the ideals and core values of the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 Programme.

1. PANNON Public Space

Location design:

Students participating in the ECOC course during the 2020/2021 academic year prepared visualisations for the site's design, which the ECOC designers used during the implementation phase. They furnished the community space with pallet furniture and the interior design and aligned the colour scheme to conform to this concept. Community events were organised to finish the site: gardening, planting ornamental plants, and painting the pallet furniture.

Location features:

A small project room (capacity: up to 10 people), a larger project room (capacity: up to 20 people) and a community space (capacity: up to 30 people, plus terrace) make up the community space. These are complemented with an office for use by the University of Pannonia staff and student representatives.

Functions of the PANNON Public Space:

  • ECOC Communication and Organizational Point of the University of Pannonia as an ECOC strategic partner
  • provides space and location for student organisations
  • UNeECC (University Network of the European Capitals of Culture) Secretariat
  • venue for elaborating projects by the winners of the ECOC tenders

  • reflecting the ECOC spirit and values in the programme plan broken down for the academic year: community-building, board game nights involving several generations, programme series to introduce foreigners living in the community, evening film shows followed by discussions, cultural programmes
  • the use of the small and large project room and the community space by ECOC programme implementers and partners through a booking system
  • a stage for the development and implementation of the generation bridge concept

In the framework of the workshop series launched in 2021, participants recruited by the staff of PANNON Public Space and ECOC (high school and university students, retired and active community organisers) conceived of a Generation Bridge concept. The ideas will materialise in the form of events that will stir and involve several generations.

2. JUTASI Public Space

The JUTASI Public Space is a unique community space, which is also the scene of a supportive presence and network generating to involve the micro-communities of the Jutasi housing project. It is the background and base of events in the Jutasi housing project, such as the Jutasi Picnic and the Circollective community initiatives.
