Music Hungary Showcase

VEB2023 implementation

In 2021, the Music Hungary Association and VEB2023 ECoC Programme jointly organized a free showcase festival in Veszprém to coincide with the music industry conference. The intent was to introduce recent newcomers to the Hungarian popular music scene.

Initially proposed by the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture (ECoC) Programme, the event aims to complement the conference with a two-day concert series, including more than 20 concerts in three locations.

The Music Hungary conference convenes the music industry professionals in the country. Starting in 2021, it is complemented by an unconventional programme element. Many fresh music projects were born during the pandemic. Still, few had come to the industry's attention, producers, or the broader public, due to a lack of performances and extensive music media coverage. Similarly, works born before the epidemic had no chance to be performed in public. The Music Hungary Association's inaugural showcase festival aims to bring together music professionals and domestic performers.

The plan now is to grow the showcase into a permanent companion event series of the conference, to perform a crucial role in discovering new talent, and offer emerging artists more opportunities in various segments of the domestic music scene.

Showcase programme 2021

A major consideration in compiling the concept was that the showcase is not and cannot become a talent show. It should feature artists who consciously strive to improve and have a vision. They have proven themselves at prestigious festivals and clubs but have yet to receive the attention they deserve. The idea is that a bit of help will go a long way in finding their deserved place. The line-up included the likes of Deva and AKC Misi. These groups are already attracting crowds at festivals, playing sold-out shows in the biggest clubs in Budapest and are clearly growing and developing dynamically. The musical styles are also varied, with rock acts like Abigél, Hocuspony and Palma Hills. Representing the alternative scene were Stranger, Villö Acetone and Sasa Lele. Also, there were Superflake, a unique phenomenon in Hungarian electronic music, and the increasingly well-known new-wave hip-hop and trap collective On The Low, represented by AKC Misi, Ibbigang + gyuris. The unique sounds of boeback, Saya Noé, and Solére, among others, dazzled the audience. The fresh sounds of the Hungarian folk scene were also in the spotlight, with Napfonat, Nasip Kismet and KurtaUtca.

The concerts took place at three venues, each with a unique atmosphere. Expresszó provides a perfect concert environment, Terem an unadulterated underground ambience and Papírkutya a more family-oriented atmosphere.

The complete list of acts in 2021 was (A-Z):
