The Old Town Market
Old Town Square is the most beautiful square in Veszprém. In addition, it is the centre of the old town and the venue of many city events. There had been a market there in the past, so there was no question that we would invite the people living in the city and its vicinity to this place again to taste and, of course, buy goods from local producers. Since October 2021, the Old Town Market has welcomed those interested in quality gastronomy to the square every two weeks. You are what you eat, after all.
Good atmosphere, friendly conversations, shared breakfasts and lunches, clean, quality domestic ingredients. Bring a shopping bag, a basket, or a canvas tote bag. Everyone goes to the market for a different reason but have a taste, and you will get hooked. We hope to revive this feeling in Old Town Square. As we experience the age-old truth that you are what you eat and as more and more people choose slow living as an escape from the daily grind, so has the market culture in Hungary evolved into somewhat of a movement. Goods from farmers' markets are experiencing a renaissance, and we believe they should not be missing from the VEB2023 ECOC programme.
At the farmers' market in Old Town Square, consumers can buy directly from local producers and farmers in the Bakony-Balaton region. In addition to all other advantages, this alternative way of shopping points to the importance of a direct and personal relationship between producer and consumer. The trust that develops is a key to consuming healthy, reliable food. Fresh bread, sausages, homemade cheeses, jams, special kinds of honey, and Balaton wines are to be tasted before, during or after the purchase.
Under one of our most important horizontal goals, we do this environmentally consciously. All utensils used on the market are made of 100% sustainable and recycled materials, and waste is collected selectively on site.
To make the market even more of a community experience, you will also find street-food trucks in the market area, an excellent option for breakfast or lunch. You can taste and buy quality wines and craft beer specialities of the Balaton Uplands at one car. At the same time, another is taken over by a different restaurant each time, preparing breakfast and lunch dishes from local ingredients. In addition, we always await visitors with thematic adult and children's programmes, lectures and cooking together.
And that's not all! In addition to gastronomy, manufacturers of non-food products also appear once a month. Master artisans sell their wares, including pottery, baskets, and even handmade soaps and jewellery.
The Old Town Market is visitor-friendly: the square is accessible for the disabled, including the toilets on site, and information boards are there to assist.
