The local history exhibition "Memory Machine," part of the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture programme, is based on 150 years of collection work by the Laczkó Dezső Museum. This has enabled the creation of a comprehensive display of Veszprém's rich historical and artistic past.

The exhibition "Memory Machine" presents objects and stories of the town of Veszprém through time. We talk about archaeological time, historical time through artefacts, as well as the real memory of the city, community time, personal time through the examples of individuals and heroes.

But what is a "MEMORY MACHINE"? The word "MEMORY MACHINE" was invented by programmer Zsolt Várady, the creator of the former (now a "museum piece") iWiW community portal.

"We can look for connections between memories, and we can draw a network of them. A connection point is, for example, that it happened at the same time or in the same place, or because of this or that. Memories can be linked, for example, in time, space, type of memory, by shared memories of the inscribers. In addition, they can also be linked in a special way. When we read a memory, we can also recall a memory of our own. A memory written on the page of a given memory is linked to the previous memory, further extending the network of connections between memories [...] whether we remember a past event depends as much on what is happening in the present as on what happened in the past. The aim is to create a system that helps us to recall past events and share them with others. This is the memory machine."

The aim of the Laczkó Dezső Museum is to link the exhibited objects, to complement each other, to form a chain because of their history.

The exhibition is recommended for those who have lived through the history of the town, for those who feel nostalgic at the sight of an exhibit, and for those who are driven to learn about Veszprém by the stories of their ancestors about the "old days".
